Democracy and Association by Mark E. Warren,

Democracy and Association by Mark E. Warren,
Tocqueville's view that a virtuous association political science and viable democracy depends on robust associational life has become a cornerstone of contemporary democratic theory. Democratic theorists generally agree that issue networks, recreational associations, support circles, religious groups, unions, advocacy groups, association political science and myriad other kinds of associations enhance democracy by cultivating citizenship, promoting public deliberation, providing voice association political science and representation, association political science and enabling varied forms of governance. Yet there has been little work to show how association political science and why different kinds of association have different effects on democracy--many supportive but others minimal or even destructive. This book offers the first systematic assessment of what associations do association political science and don't do for democracy. Mark Warren explains how association political science and when associational life expands the domain, inclusiveness, association political science and authenticity of democracy. He looks at which associations are most likely to foster individuals' capacities for democratic citizenship, provoke political debate, open existing institutions, guide market activities, or bring democratic decision-making to new venues. Throughout, Warren also considers the trade-offs involved, noting, for example, that organizational solidarity can dampen internal dissent association political science and deliberation even as it enhances public deliberation. Blending political association political science and social theory with an eye to social science, "Democracy association political science and Association" will draw social scientists with interests in democracy, political philosophers, students of public policy, as well as the many activists who fortify the varied landscape we call civil society. As an original analysis of which associational soils yield vigorous democracies, the book will have amajor impact on democratic theory association political science and empirical research.

Constructing Identities in Mexican American Political Organizations: Choosing Issues, Taking Sides by Benjamin Marquez,

Constructing Identities in Mexican American Political Organizations: Choosing Issues, Taking Sides by Benjamin Marquez,
"Marquez has produced a valuable study of political diversity among Mexican American interest groups. His work exposes the fault of equating Mexican American--and by extension, I think, any other--ethnicity with any specific, much less a uniquely radical, political ideology."--Sidney Plotkin, Professor of Political Science, Vassar CollegeThe formation of a group identity has always been a major preoccupation of Mexican American political organizations, whether they seek to assimilate into the dominant Anglo society or to remain separate from it. Yet organizations that sought to represent a broad cross section of the Mexican American population, such as LULAC association political science and the American G.I. Forum, have dwindled in membership association political science and influence, while newer, more targeted political organizations are prospering--clearly suggesting that successful political organizing requires more than shared ethnicity association political science and the experience of discrimination. This book sheds new light on the process of political identity formation through a study of the identity politics practiced by four major Mexican American political organizations--the Southwest Network for Environmental association political science and Economic Justice, the Southwest Industrial Areas Foundation, the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce, association political science and the Mexican American Women's National Association (now known as MANA--A National Latina Organization). Through interviews with activists in each organization association political science and research into their records, Benjamin Marquez clarifies the racial, class-based, association political science and cultural factors that have caused these organizations to create widely differing political identities. He likewise demonstrates why their specific goals resonate only withparticular segments of the Mexican American community.
